In Britain, people would rely on other people to wake up.

Meaning, the “Knocker Upper” would walk down the street and hit your door or window a few times. Rods were used, but so were pea shooters, rattles, and friggin’ HAMMERS.

I get flipped out by the weird cop knocks delivery people use, but hammers? Good lord.
