NASA is Growing Chili Peppers in Space
When I first read about this, I immediately thought about Space Mountain at Disneyland having the Red Hot Chili Peppers “on board” the ship.
A lot has been going on with space lately, including…gardening?
NASA announced that astronauts on board the International Space Station are growing red and green chili peppers!
The peppers are going to be the first foods grown and eaten in space. They’ll also be coming back to Earth for tests.
“The challenge is the ability to feed crews in low-Earth orbit, and then to sustain explorers during future missions beyond low-Earth orbit to destinations including the Moon, as part of the Artemis program, and eventually to Mars,” says head investigator Matt Romeyn. “We are limited to crops that don’t need storage, or extensive processing.”
